Our Story
At The Silk Route, every piece is a bridge between centuries of tradition and today’s modern world. Our journey begins in the valleys of Kashmir, where generations of close family and dear friends have worked as skilled artisans — handcrafting beautiful, high-quality goods using techniques passed down through the ages. From hand-knotted rugs and delicate scarves to finely made leather accessories, each item reflects a deep respect for craftsmanship, sustainability, and cultural heritage. We take pride in selling items produced by traditional methods, helping to preserve rare artisan skills for future generations. Opening our store in Halifax has allowed us to share Kashmir’s artistry with our community. Whether you’re shopping for your home, wardrobe, or a meaningful gift, everything at The Silk Route is made with care, history, and heart.
Our Process
Each of our products begins with raw, locally sourced materials and is transformed through a time-honoured, multi-step process that embodies care and craftsmanship. Our artisans bring years of honed skill to every stage of production, and their profound expertise shines through in every meticulous detail. From dyeing and weaving to stitching and finishing, each piece is made by hand over days or even weeks. The result is not only beautiful, but enduring — a reflection of heritage, skill, and intention. Every item is chosen to reflect the beauty, functionality, and timeless design that define our roots. We hope you’ll find something that resonates not just in the way it looks, but in the story it tells.
Our Values
Our values are deeply personal — all of the artisans who create our items are family and friends who have been honing their craft for generations. Their artistry, patience, and dedication are the soul of our work, and the reason we can share these timeless pieces with you. We honour their expertise by compensating them fairly as true artists, not simply as labourers. This reflects our commitment to fairness, respect, and preserving the traditions that inspire every creation. For us, responsible craftsmanship means building a business rooted in care for people, culture, and the natural materials we use. These values guide how we create and share our work with the world.
The Heart Behind it all

Hi, I’m Cailean, founder of The Silk Route. This journey began with love — for my husband Nadeem, who was born in Kashmir and is now a proud Canadian, and for the breathtaking beauty of his homeland. When we got married, Nadeem was eager to show me where he grew up, and our first trip to Kashmir together was unforgettable. I was captivated by the rich colours, intricate textures, and timeless artistry woven into everything from architecture to handcrafted textiles. Each visit deepened our shared appreciation and sparked a dream: to bring the elegance and soul of Kashmiri craftsmanship to others. The Silk Route was born from that dream — a love letter to Kashmir, from our home here in Halifax.
